Read Bret's nominating statement:

Bret Turner is one of three HAZMAT specialists in the EHS department under the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. His role involves managing complex and high-risk tasks, including disposing of chemically unstable hazardous waste (such as explosive peroxides and DEA-controlled substances), assisting researchers with chemical disposal during lab closures, and guiding new researchers through federal and state compliance requirements to ensure safe laboratory environments and successful regulatory inspections.

Beyond his core responsibilities, Bret actively volunteers for initiatives that promote EHS’s mission and environmental stewardship. He participates in campus events like the Block Party, coordinates electronics disposal efforts with the Office of Information Technology and vendors and collaborates with leadership during Gemba walks to showcase EHS’s impact. Recently, he partnered with Facilities Management to develop tailored safety training for their staff.

Bret’s commitment to professional growth is evident through his completion of the Employee Learning and Development Manager Certification program and earning a master’s in public health using the university’s tuition assistance program. His dedication, collaborative spirit and proactive approach make him an invaluable asset to the university community.
