ColoradoSPH Annual Research Exchange Keynote Speaker Urges Resilience

Written by Colorado School of Public Health | October 13, 2025

ColoradoSPH held its annual research exchange this month with more than 160 attendees, more than 30 posters,  and a keynote address from Dr. Carol Mangione of UCLA.

Mangione’s keynote was a candid reflection on the challenges researchers face amid federal instability.

Rather than accept defeat, Mangione urged the audience to draw on resilience. She encouraged researchers to find pathways to lower costs, using AI to find funding sources, to cold call philanthropic organizations, foundations, and the private sector.

“Pivot by getting creative and being smart because your work matters,” she said.

Mangione is Division Chief of General Internal Medicine and Health Services Research & Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Public Health, University of California, Los Angeles.

This research exchange brings the ColoradoSPH community together in person. It's a chance to celebrate the great work of colleagues, share and trade ideas, and build bridges across departments, units, and campuses. Faculty and students from all three of our universities—CU Anschutz, CSU, and UNC—and community partners who share a dedication to public health are invited to participate.

The research exchange also featured panel topics on innovation, collaboration, and diversifying research funding. Most importantly, it featured poster presentations from over 30 students and fellows in various ColoradoSPH programs.

Four student posters received awards, including:

  • Ainsley Lotito (MPH Student)

  • Yannick Lechemdem Ngunyi (MPH Student)

  • Chelsea Walker-Mao (DrPH Student)

  • Blair Weikel (PhD Student)
