Randall Meacham, MD, professor of surgery and chief of the urology division, has retired after 26 years at the University of Colorado Anschutz.
“Randy’s has been an extraordinary career of leadership, service, and impact at the University of Colorado School of Medicine,” Robert McIntyre, MD, interim chair of the Department of Surgery, writes.
Meacham led the Division of Urology starting in 2000 and served in numerous institutional leadership roles within the Department of Surgery, including as Executive Vice Chair of Quality and Clinical Affairs and as Medical Staff President at University of Colorado Hospital.
Meacham also held significant leadership roles outside of CU Anschutz, which spoke to his status as a leader in the field of urology. He served as president of the American Urological Association from 2023-2024. He also served as chair of the ACGME Urology Residency Review Committee, the governing body that sets and oversees accreditation standards for urology training programs in the United States.
Meacham speaks at the American Urological Association conference in 2024.
The transformation of the urology division over the past decade is an especially fitting reflection of Meacham’s leadership. The enterprise has expanded across adult, pediatric, and community practice platforms, with the clinical workforce growing substantially and annual adult urology patients more than doubling from 2016 to 2026. Over the same period, the division developed a sponsored research portfolio totaling approximately $7.4 million, with 73% from federal/NIH sources, while its educational programs produced 51 resident and fellow graduates over 10 years. Philanthropic support approached $1 million, further strengthening the clinical, research, and educational missions of the Department of Surgery.
Living in Colorado supported Meacham’s love of outdoor activities including running, cycling, camping, snowboarding, and mountaineering. He has completed multiple marathons, triathlons, and single-day bicycling events ranging from 100 - 200 miles. He’s also climbed 48 of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks.
As Meacham retires, the Department of Surgery and the School of Medicine celebrate an exceptional surgeon, educator, and national leader, and the enduring academic enterprise he helped build at CU Anschutz.
“We are deeply grateful to Randy for his decades of friendship, service, leadership, mentorship, and commitment to our patients, trainees, faculty, and institution. His legacy will be felt at CU Anschutz for many years to come,” McIntyre says.
