As a child, Rita Lee of Southern California used wooden popsicle sticks to build splints for her stuffed animals. She used toilet paper and tape to simulate casts and bandaged make-believe wounds with materials found around the house. Although she considered other career options in high school, medicine was the only thing that ever felt right.
