“Trump Signs Executive Order on Childhood Vaccines.”
Corey Lyon, DO, FAAFP, Program Director of the CU Family Medicine Residency Program and Professor of Family Medicine at CU Anschutz, was interviewed by 9NEWS about an executive order that would split the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine into multiple shots instead of a single combined vaccine, while also calling for a reduction in the overall number of pediatric vaccines.
With the school year beginning, vaccines are typically top of mind for many families. However, according to Dr. Lyon, increasing the frequency of MMR vaccinations while simultaneously reducing the overall number of recommended vaccines could create confusion and contribute to vaccine hesitancy.
“It could be potentially another barrier, as we already have barriers around information that’s not accurate—confusing patients and families,” said Dr. Lyon. “Actually, our immune system does better with those combined vaccines because it’s able to take those and start building your immune system, learning from those vaccines, and it does that at one time versus at four individual times.”
