Giving Back For Health

Written by Robert Thompson | November 19, 2019

As part of the Diversity & Health Equity Program, in January, 2020 we will be rolling out a new year-round giving initiative which will allow department members to learn about and support a community organization that serves vulnerable populations, focuses on health equity, and/or addresses the social determinants of health.

To kick things off, we will be supporting Casa de Paz in our year-end donation drive!

Casa de Paz offers support to families separated by immigrant detention by providing: shelter and meals to those recently released from the detention center in Aurora; access to phones, WiFi, computers, and transportation to help individuals reconnect with their family members; emotional support to those who are currently in the detention center.

Impact on health:the work Casa de Paz does provides immigrants with a sense of belonging, which supports mental health, and helps to connect them to their support systems, which addresses one of the social determinants of health.

We are collecting: cash, Target/King Soopers gift cards, paper plates, dryer sheets, deodorant, adult underwear, adult socks, adult shoes, and more!

Email Tessa.Carlson@cuanschutz.edu for a complete list and for volunteer opportunities.

Look for the collection bin for items, and an envelope for gift cards and cash, in the main lobby of the Department of Family Medicine in Academic Office Building 1.

Please have all donations in by Monday, December 30, 2019.  Tessa will coordinate dropping off all donations to Casa de Paz in the beginning of the new year.
