Grants: HRSA Expansion Grant Awarded to Addiction Medicine Fellowship

Written by Brittany Manansala | July 29, 2025

The Department of Family Medicine (DFM) Addiction Medicine Fellowship is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Addiction Medicine Expansion Grant from the Bureau of Health Workforce in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). This grant will fund the first Rural Addiction Medicine Fellowship Track in the nation.

The new Rural Track expansion will allow the Addiction Medicine Fellowship to welcome two additional fellows each year. Each fellow will spend half of their fellowship training—six months—at substance use treatment sites and programs across rural southern Colorado, specifically in the San Luis Valley.

Kaylin A Klie, MD, MA, FASAM, Associate Professor for the Departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry, and Program Director for the Addiction Medicine Fellowship, is thrilled to have received this prestigious grant. Dr. Klie and her team are eager to put this funding to good use as they increase access to substance treatment care and education in rural Colorado.

Dr. Klie acknowledged the critical contributions of Stephanie Diaz-Herbert, Grants and Contracts Specialist for the DFM, and James Ely Walker, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor for the DFM and Site Director for the rural rotations. She noted that they “were essential to getting this grant in successfully.” Adding that, Dr. Walker will also be joining the Addiction Medicine Fellowship as a core faculty member.

Dr. Klie shared that this project was years in the making and would not have been possible without the support of her colleagues. “James Ely Walker, MD, and I have spent several years dreaming and brainstorming about this initiative, with invaluable support from Mark Deutchman, MD. It’s truly an honor to see it come to life.”

Requests are already coming in from other rural addiction care sites interested in exploring how fellowship training might expand to their unique communities across the state.

Congratulations to the Addiction Medicine Fellowship team!
