The High Plains Research Network (HPRN) is part of an NIH-funded, randomized national trial (the CAPTURE Study) aiming to improve the detection of COPD symptoms in patients seen in primary care settings. We are working with researchers at Cornell University, University of Michigan, National Jewish Health, and 6 other practice-based research networks around the country.
HPRN worked with 14 practices and enrolled over 600 patients.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S.
15+ million Americans have diagnosed COPD.
12+ million Americans are estimated to have undiagnosed COPD.
COPD is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disease, especially within primary care.
The CAPTURE Tool uses five simple patient-reported questions and selective Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) to help identify undiagnosed patients with COPD that may be appropriate for currently available treatments.
Results from studies in controlled settings are promising. This study is validating the CAPTURE Tool in diverse, real-world practice settings.
