Emma Gilchrist, MPH/MSPH, Deputy Director of the Eugene S. Farley, Jr. Health Policy Center and Senior Instructor of Family Medicine at CU Anschutz, is a co-author of recent article published in Current Psychiatry Reports titled “Integrated Specialty Care: A Review of the Current State.”
Integrating behavioral health into specialty care can benefit providers and patients alike. The study reviews integrated specialty care literature published over the past five years, summarizes key themes and identifies next steps to help advance the field.
“This invited review with Laurie Ivey, PsyD, MA, of the Department of Psychiatry was an opportunity to build on our commentary published in 2023,” said Dr. Gilchrist. “Our work focused on leveraging lessons learned from behavioral health integration (BHI) in primary care to advance BHI in specialty care settings. Our review of the current literature aligns with what we know about BHI in primary care, that in specialty care settings there is growing evidence of value for both patients and clinicians, as well as a need for sustainable financing and a prepared workforce to support widespread implementation. This review also provided a publication opportunity for two leaders at the Farley Health Policy Center: Anne-Stuart Bell, Ph.D., M.Ed., Postdoctoral Psychology Fellow, and Mary Taylor (M.T.) Goeltz, Graduate Research Assistant.”
