Huge shoe donation is giant step toward fighting global poverty

“I’m a type 1 diabetic for 43 years, and I have foot issues,” she said. Dana Davis was 7 years old when she was diagnosed. Her father was billionaire Marvin Davis. Her mother founded the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Davis was a teacher-turned-shoe entrepreneur. But in 2015, she walked away from the business to head the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. “There’s hundreds of shoes,” she said. “What do you do with them?” Davis opted to donate them. The shoes were packed, stacked and trucked to Wheat Ridge. They were deposited in the warehouse of Soles4Souls.

‘It’s not too late’: free flu shots given out at stock show

Students from the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy helped give free flu shots at the National Western Stock Show Saturday. The shots came just as the number of diagnosed cases of influenza are on the rise in Colorado. One exhibitor was especially grateful. “She was very good, didn’t even hurt.”

Colorado Doctor Carol Foster publishes book on overcoming vertigo

“It’s very unusual to have something get fixed instantly,” explained Foster. But Foster, associate professor of Otolaryngology at CU School of Medicine, developed the vertigo fix. In 2012, Foster showed us her Half Somersault maneuver. Using her daughter to demonstrate she explained, “Tip your head up to look at the ceiling.” You then put your head upside down like you’re going to do a somersault. “In that position, I want you to turn to face your left elbow,” Foster said. You wait for any dizziness to end then raise your head to back level. Wait again for dizziness to end, then sit back quickly. The Half Somersault maneuver has been a huge hit with about 5 million views on YouTube to date. “I get a ton of emails every day,” said Foster.

Just minutes of physical activity count towards better health

“Any step they take is important for their health,” said Dr. Amy Huebschmann with the Center for Women’s Health Research at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Huebschmann researches methods to get people more active. Right now, she is studying 50 people with Type 2 diabetes. Half, including Glenda, get physical activity coaching by telephone. The others get a handout explaining the guidelines. “So far, our pilot data show that there’s more physical activity, as well as better function, better ability to do activities of daily living in the patients who receive the coaching,” said Huebschmann.

CU Heroes Clinic’ Keeps Colorado Veterans Smiling

The University of Colorado is dedicated to helping keep Colorado veterans smiling. The CU School of Dental Medicine runs the “CU Heroes Clinic” on the Anschutz Campus. It is a program of free and discounted dental care for men and women who have served in the armed forces. The Department of Veterans Affairs only offers dental care for veterans who are 100% disabled or have a service-connected injury to their mouth.
