From the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs: Reimagining Graduate School Operations

Feb. 17, 2022

Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to share some updates on our consolidated University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus Graduate School.

The current organization and administrative structure for graduate education at CU Denver | Anschutz – a cross-campus Graduate School with a single dean – has been in place since 2009/2010 with the appointment of the first dean, Barry Shur, PhD, and continues today under David Engelke, PhD. This structure is undergoing some changes.

At CU Anschutz, administration of 13 basic science PhD programs recently moved from the Graduate School to the CU School of Medicine’s new Office of Research Education.

At CU Denver, graduate services and operations will soon be moved from the consolidated Graduate School and embedded within other offices on the CU Denver campus. This change is part of an effort at CU Denver to reorganize graduate education to align with that campus’ strategic goals.

While CU Denver transitions its graduate operations over the coming months, CU Anschutz will maintain our Graduate School as an administrative entity. Our graduate education operations – including recruitment, admissions, enrollment, student progress tracking, and career development – will remain in place on our campus as before. The Postdoc Office will also continue to function at CU Anschutz as a part of the Graduate School. The full administrative separation of the CU Denver and CU Anschutz components of the Graduate School is anticipated to be effective July 1, 2022.

Graduate education is an essential piece of our mission, and we remain deeply committed to providing excellent services and support to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows training at the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. We will work to minimize any disruptions to our programs as these changes take place, and I am here to answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Roderick Nairn, PhD
Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs
