How Can I Be a Better Caregiver for My Loved One with Alzheimer's?

Written by Jewel Midelis | February 07, 2022

Alzheimer's disease steals what makes us, us: our minds. Loved ones appear as strangers. Memories become ever more distant. A home of 50 years, one of which you knew every nook and cranny, feels foreign.

Alzheimer’s and My Grandfather

Those affected by Alzheimer’s slowly lose their memories, are easily confused and grow increasingly detached from the world around them. In a personal essay, Jewel Midelis, social media manager, chronicles the decline of a family member with the disease.

After returning from visiting my grandfather suffering from the disease, I had questions. How can I or my parents be better caregivers? What should we do? What have we learned about how to best to support Alzheimer’s patients?

I reached out to Samantha Holden, MD, director of the Memory Disorders Clinic at the University of Colorado Alzheimer's and Cognition Center and assistant professor in the Department of Neurology, to find answers on how to support and care for my loved one with Alzheimer's.
