National Preparedness Month: Campus Events Teach Resiliency Skills

Written by Kelsea Pieters | August 31, 2021

In observance of National Preparedness Month this September, the Emergency Management Division (EMD) is hosting a month-long series of community events and classes during September, both virtually and in-person on campus. National Preparedness Month exists to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen anytime, both on and off campus.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus EMD works in coordination with the CU Denver EMD to provide guidance and support of emergency preparedness on both campuses. Through collaboration and coordination with all students, faculty, staff, visitors and external partners, the division is continually striving to create a culture of preparedness for the campus community.

National Preparedness Month activities include:

SafeZone information tents: The CU Anschutz Police Department utilizes the SafeZone app as a personal well-being tool to ensure your safety and provide security while on the campus. To safeguard the quickest response time to your location, download the app on your mobile device today and stop by the SafeZone Tent in Boettcher Commons on Thursday, Sept. 16, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Active harmer classes: Active harmer situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Because active harmer situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes before law enforcement arrives on the scene, individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active harmer situation. Active harmer response classes are virtual, on Tuesday, Sept. 21 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 23 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Register for active harmer classes here.

Stop the bleed classes: A bleeding injury can happen anywhere. Life-threatening bleeding can happen in people injured in serious accidents or disasters. Instead of being a witness, you can become an immediate responder because you know how to STOP THE BLEED. This training will provide half instruction and half skills assessment. You will leave the class with the skills, tools and tourniquet necessary to provide life-saving help. In-person classes are happening Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Thursday, Sept. 30, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a 20-participant capacity. Register for stop the bleed classes here.
