Why would you want to climb Mount Everest? “Because it’s there.”

The famous quote uttered by George Mallory to The New York Times in 1923 has been the echo of climbers looking to tackle the world’s highest peaks for the last century. The call of the Himalayas has become so popular that Nepal has built an entire infrastructure to support those looking to make the trek.

CPAP Study at High Altitude

Strickland and his team conducted a pilot study last summer here in Colorado that showed that CPAP reliably improved oxygen levels at rest and during vigorous exertion at high altitude. The study was recently published in High Altitude Medicine & Biology.

Brian Strickland, MD, an instructor of emergency medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine who specializes in altitude and wilderness medicine, is one of a few CU Anschutz Medical Campus researchers who has spent two seasons in the Himalayas delivering healthcare to the Sherpas, porters and mountaineers. Below, Laura Kelley, media relations professional in the CU Anschutz Office of Communications, speaks with Strickland about his research.
