Stephen R. Daniels, MD, PhD, MPH, has been chosen as the president of the American Pediatric Society (APS), commencing his term in June of 2024. He currently holds the position of chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, along with being the pediatrician-in-chief and L. Joseph Butterfield Chair in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
With a membership spanning over two decades within the APS, Daniels has made significant contributions, including his service on the Nominating Committee from 2015–16 and his involvement in the APS Council from 2017–22. His role in shaping the APS Strategic Plan has been crucial in defining a vision for the organization, focusing on establishing a Society of Action to strengthen academic pediatrics, promote diversity and inclusion, advocate for health equity, support senior APS members and ensure a solid financial foundation for APS.
Daniels is a prominent figure in the field of pediatrics, renowned globally for his notable research on cardiovascular risk factors in children and their long-term effects on cardiovascular health. His expertise covers pediatric care, cardiology and epidemiology, evident in his leadership roles in various national societies, where he consistently offers valuable insights rooted in science and medicine.
In his ballot submission, Daniels emphasized the importance of the recent National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report on the future pediatric subspecialty workforce. He envisions APS utilizing its membership to enhance academic pediatrics through collaborative initiatives with other organizations to improve pediatric training, workforce development, healthcare financing and research.
