New Women in Medicine Exhibit: Honoring Bonnie W. Camp, MD, PhD

As part of the rotating "Nancy Nelson – Women in Medicine" exhibit series, which highlights significant women in healthcare and medicine, the Strauss Health Sciences Library proudly presents its latest exhibit honoring Bonnie W. Camp, MD, PhD, a pioneering psychologist, pediatrician, educator, researcher, and philanthropist whose work transformed developmental-behavioral pediatrics and improved the lives of children and families around the world.

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in 1931, Dr. Camp demonstrated exceptional academic ability from an early age. She graduated from high school at fourteen, earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in psychology, and later returned to school to earn her medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Colorado and became one of the nation's first physicians to combine expertise in psychology and pediatrics.

Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Camp championed interdisciplinary care for children with developmental and behavioral challenges. As Director of the John F. Kennedy Child Development Center (now JFK Partners) and a faculty member in the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry, she advanced collaborative models of care, helped validate the Denver Developmental Screening Test, and co-developed innovative early childhood programs, including Think Aloud, Bright Beginnings (now Bright by Three), and PUPPETalk™, which continues to support early language development and strengthen parent-child relationships.

A prolific scholar and mentor, Dr. Camp has authored more than 100 publications and presentations, while her research on early childhood development and language continues to influence clinicians and researchers decades later. Her leadership helped establish developmental-behavioral pediatrics as a nationally recognized pediatric subspecialty, and her philanthropy has supported numerous lectureships, professorships and awards that continue to advance child health and recognize excellence in medicine.

More than seven decades after beginning her career, Dr. Camp continues to inspire future generations through her scholarship, mentorship, advocacy and generosity. Her enduring legacy reflects a lifelong commitment to improving the health and well-being of children and families.

Continuing her commitment to child health, Dr. Camp recently pledged $2 million to establish the Bonnie W. Camp, MD, PhD, Endowed Chair in Pediatrics, creating lasting support for pediatric research, clinical care and healthy child development at CU Anschutz.
