PharmD Student Awarded Prestigious Equity Scholarship

Written by Jordan Kellerman | December 03, 2024

Doctor of Pharmacy student Kiri Carmody has been selected by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) as one of seven individuals nation-wide awarded the Walmart Health Equity Scholarship for Pharmacy Students recognizing their leadership, academic success, and a commitment to serving rural or medically underserved patient populations upon graduation.

"Receiving this scholarship will greatly support my academic and career aspirations to serve and provide care to all patients,” Carmody said. “This scholarship will allow me to dedicate myself to becoming a clinical pharmacist that advocates and supports patients in all aspects of my career.”

Now in its third year, the goal of the scholarship program is to promote and support a diverse population of student pharmacists who will advance health equity. Each awardee will receive a single $5,000 scholarship.

“The financial assistance provided will allow me to fully immerse into experiences now that will lead me into a successful career in the near future," she added

Carmody has spent a lot of her time at the DAWN (Dedicated to Aurora’s Wellness and Needs) Clinic on the CU Anschutz campus, a student-run free healthcare clinic that partners with the community to serve individuals in need. There, she realized she enjoyed working with diverse populations and enjoyed educating her patients on why they are taking certain medications, interactions, and how to avoid side effects.

“I can see a future for me in pharmacy education, where I can work to help expand our field and make healthcare accessible for all, and this award will allow me to reach my goals,” she said.
