Helping Children and Their Families Cope With a Cancer Diagnosis

Written by Greg Glasgow | September 01, 2023

The fear, anger, and anxiety that come with a cancer diagnosis are only magnified in children, who—along with their family members—often need help working through the emotions that surround cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.

At the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado Cancer Center member Robert Casey, PhD, oversees the Wellness Program, working with children and families on coping skills and emotional adjustment. Casey leads a team that includes psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, an art therapist, and a chaplain.

We spoke with Casey about the Wellness Program and what he likes most about his job.
