Written by Cancer Center | July 19, 2019

It’s time to find your running shoes and sign up for the Race 4 Research 5K run/walk!

On August 18, 2019, Race 4 Research is returning to Denver. The event raises funds for cancer research in Colorado in memory of Michele Plachy-Rubin. Plachy-Rubin lost her battle to brain cancer in 1998. Plachy-Rubin, a young wife, mother, and teacher for Denver Public Schools was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1996. During her treatment Plachy-Rubin’s friends conceived the idea for Race 4 Research as an effort to raise money to fund local cancer research.

Elissa Banker Brown, the 2019 honoree for the event, is a patient of Ginger Borges, MD, Director of the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Translational Program at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. Elissa was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 31 years old. Now, she wants the world to know that young women can get breast cancer too.

“I feel lucky to live in a state that has some of the best doctors in the country, including my oncologist, Dr. Virginia Borges, who leads breast cancer research out of the University of Colorado, with a focus on women under 40,” Elissa says in this article. “Please join me on Sunday, August 18 at the Race 4 Research in Washington Park, Denver so that together we can raise money for the Cancer League of Colorado, an organization that is dedicated to supporting and furthering cancer research performed in Colorado.”
