The CCTSI is pleased to announce that, starting July 1, 2024, William Cornwell, MD, MSCS, will serve as associate medical director of the Adult CTRC. He is an associate professor of cardiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a cardiologist at the UCHealth Heart Failure and Transplant Program. He also serves as the director of sports cardiology and director of cardiac rehabilitation at UCHealth.

“Dr. Cornwell is an experienced investigator who has used CTRC resources, both inpatient and outpatient, to support his research programs in cardiovascular health for the past eight years. His experience as a translational researcher, and as a leader of clinical units and programs at the University of Colorado Hospital, make him highly qualified to help direct this high-level research resource,” said Tom Campbell, MD, chief clinical research officer at UCHealth and medical director of the CTRC for the past 16 years.

Dr. Cornwell’s translational research focuses on understanding cardiovascular and exercise science across the spectrum of health and disease, from elite athletes to patients with heart failure, pulmonary vascular disease, and healthy controls. He also studies the impact of environmental stressors on cardiovascular function. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, and private industry.

"I feel very blessed to be a part of the CCTSI. They've been doing great research and high-quality work,” said Cornwell. “To whatever extent I can help improve that by helping clinicians better understand what resources are available [in the CTRC], and bringing those together while working across campus, I am committed to doing so."

In his new role, he will work closely with CTRC leaders to improve and facilitate the CTRC's ability to conduct clinical research while supporting collaboration between clinicians, nurses, techs and research staff.

Dr. Cornwell completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers and his cardiology and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology fellowship trainings at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He also completed a postdoctoral cardiology research fellowship at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine in Dallas TX, prior to joining faculty at the University of Colorado In 2016.

“I am coming into this role…with the hope of being able to contribute to and improve an environment that is already functioning at a very high capacity and accomplishing incredible work,” Cornwell said.
