In the U.S., dementia is common, affecting about one in 10 adults 65 and older. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly common in health care and everyday life, researchers and clinicians are asking what role it could play in caring for people with dementia and supporting their families.
We asked University of Colorado Anschutz Department of Medicine experts Hillary Lum, MD, PhD, a professor of geriatric medicine, and Matthew DeCamp, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine and bioethicist, about the potential uses of AI in dementia care and what may be ahead for patients, caregivers, and clinicians. Lum specializes in dementia care and caregiver support, while DeCamp focuses on the ethics of AI in health care.
