Spotlight on 2020 General Surgery Graduates

Written by Shelly Lange | June 11, 2020

June 8, 2020 marked the graduation for general surgery residents within the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, residents, family, friends, faculty and staff gathered together virtually to celebrate the completion of their programs and present awards.

Residency award winners were:

  • Robert Torphy, M.D. - Ernest E. Moore Award for Basic Science
  • Heather Carmichael, M.D. - Frederick Grover Award for Clinical Research and the Ben Eiseman Clinical Research Award
  • Michael Jarrett, M.D. - Ben Eiseman Basic Science Research Award
  • Maggie Hodges, M.D. - J. Cuthbert Owens Award

Program Director, Mark Nehler, M.D. and Department Chair, Richard Schulick, M.D. spoke highly of the graduating class. While highlighting what the class had accomplished, both made note of what the class has given them, stretching and expanding their own methods and approaches to teaching. Confirmation that no matter our status in life there is always something to learn from others.

As we say goodbye to the 2020 graduates, we look forward to welcoming the class of 2021.
