"Colorado integrated behavioral health plus (CIBH+): aligning behavioral health within a generalist approach to primary care"

Collaborators from the CU School of Medicine, largely from the departments of Family Medicine and Psychiatry, have just published "Colorado integrated behavioral health plus (CIBH+): aligning behavioral health within a generalist approach to primary care"—a model case study about behavioral health care that has been years in the making.

Associated Professor of Family Medicine and Director of Integrated Services Shandra Brown Levey, PhD, had the following to share about the publication of this study: "This truly means a great deal. This paper represents the culmination of many years of work, during which we developed, refined, and iterated on the model to ensure clarity. I’m deeply grateful to be part of this work and the meaningful impact it has had—and we hope will continue to have—on our care teams, patients, and communities. I also feel fortunate to work in a space where we have the opportunity to make a positive and lasting difference in the world around us."

From the Case Study:

Colorado Integrated Behavioral Health Plus (CIBH+) uses a whole-person health perspective to deliver comprehensive integrated care in the primary care setting, building upon existing clinically-and cost-effective models of integrated care. Here, we describe the rationale for the CIBH+ approach, detailing key implementation elements and its ability to mitigate population, patient, and provider challenges. With this description, we hope to spark optimism, enthusiasm, and ongoing innovation in other behavioral health and primary care providers seeking new ways to improve patient and provider experience.
