Jennifer Corliss, MD, FAAFP, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at CU Anschutz and Director of UCHealth Lone Tree Primary Care, joined fellow experts to explain symptoms Coloradans are experiencing amid a new flu variant, "subclade K," and declining vaccination rates.
“Flu symptoms are the same with the new strain, including cough, congestion, and fever, but patients are showing more significant signs of fatigue and body aches with subclade K, which can lead to complications, such as dehydration, that result in a person being hospitalized for the flu,” said Dr. Corliss.

Dr. Jennifer Corliss was featured on a Colorado Public Radio podcast discussing Colorado’s severe flu season and how hospitalizations skyrocketed from November to December, reaching record-breaking levels.
“We’re a bit surprised just how big this fight currently is. How contagious this strain is, and how sick the patients are feeling,” said Dr. Corliss.
“Flu hospitalizations, though alarmingly high, dipped last week.”

Colorado Public Radio reports that while the COVID patient surge taught providers valuable lessons, and influenza cases have declined slightly since early January, record-breaking numbers continue to strain hospitals and outpatient clinics.
“It's the same picture at UCHealth LoneTree Primary Care, where Dr. Jennifer Corliss is the medical director. She said health systems learned a lot from COVID about managing increased volumes, but ‘that can be a significant strain on the hospitals as well as the outpatient clinics. Just managing these patients and having enough room for them and enough staffing is always a concern.’”
