Professor of Family Medicine Tamara Oser, MD, and Associate Professor of Family Medicine Sean Oser, MD, MPH, are co-authors on a recent publication from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP): "Optimizing Practice Workflows to Successfully Implement Continuous Glucose Monitoring."

From the article:

"Despite the recommendations for CGM use, surveys estimate that only 38.6% of primary care clinicians and 44% of primary care nurse practitioners have ever prescribed CGM. Most frequently cited barriers to CGM implementation in primary care include insurance-related factors, such as limited insurance coverage, time-consuming prior authorization processes, extensive required documentation and prohibitive out-of-pocket costs to patients.

The American Academy of Family Physicians conducted focus groups to explore the barriers to successfully implement and use CGM in primary care settings and determine potential solutions. Focus group participants included patients, primary care clinicians, durable medical equipment suppliers, pharmacy suppliers and health insurance plan representatives. This work builds on numerous resources and tools already developed by the AAFP."

The Osers, deeply invested in this work through the Practice Innovation Program's (PIP) Primary Care Diabetes Lab (PCDL), have been contributing to this AAFP work over time, and more information about Continuous Glucose Monitoring (or CGM) can be found on their website
