Seth Kramer, DO, MPH was recently selected as 1 of 2 AAFP RapSDI scholars for funding in 2025. The funded project is “Feasibility of Use of Fitbit, Brief Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES), and Targeted Chatbot Text Messaging in Sedentary Adults with Type 2 Diabetes in Primary Care Settings."
The project aims to evaluate adults with type 2 diabetes, combining a Fitbit device with AI-delivered DSMES and text messaging. The primary focus is assessing the feasibility of this approach by examining factors such as device wear time, participant retention, and satisfaction. The research will look at changes in behavioral metrics, clinical outcomes, and psychosocial factors, while also exploring the potential economic benefits for healthcare providers implementing this technology-supported diabetes management strategy. Seth was pleased to share: “I am thrilled to have been chosen for the AFP RapSDI grant, which gives me the chance to work alongside the AAFP National Research Network and the DARTNet Institute. This opportunity will significantly boost my clinical research skills in family medicine and support the development and implementation of an innovative, patient-centered pilot study.”
Seth will be supported in research by the DFM's Tamara Oser, MD; and in health economics by Jack Cronin, MS, from ACCORDS.
