Sourav Poddar, MD, FAMSSM, Associate Professor of Family Medicine at CU Anschutz, is the inaugural recipient of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) 12th Man Award. The award was presented to Dr. Poddar earlier this month at the AOSSM Annual Meeting in Seattle.
The AOSSM 12th Man Award, established in 2026 by AOSSM President Eric McCarty, MD, is an inaugural honor inspired by the sports tradition of the “12th man.” Often used to describe fans and other supporters whose dedication helps strengthen a team beyond its 11 players on the field, the term symbolizes the importance of individuals working behind the scenes through their support, unity, and loyalty. Reflecting that spirit, the award recognizes non-orthopaedic professionals whose exceptional contributions have helped advance the field of Sports Medicine.
When asked what receiving the award means to him, Dr. Poddar said, "I was surprised and honored to receive this. It really reflects the outstanding colleagues I have had, and continue to have, the privilege of working with over the years."
In addition to receiving this award, Dr. Poddar delivered the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Exchange Lecture during the meeting as the organization's Publications Committee Chair and a member of its board of directors. Photos from his lecture and award presentation are shown below.
Congratulations to Dr. Poddar on this inaugural honor and for his dedication to advancing the field of Sports Medicine.
