Artemis II: Preparing for Humanity’s Return Toward the Moon

Written by Laura Kelley | February 02, 2026

Artemis II and the Orion spacecraft are undergoing final preparations and testing as NASA readies a four-person crew to travel closer to the moon than humans have in more than 50 years. The mission marks a major step toward returning astronauts to lunar orbit, and a CU Anschutz graduate is playing a key role in ensuring the astronauts remain healthy in space.

Beyond the mission’s technical demands, astronaut health before, during and after the flight is critical to its success. The medical research collected during the 10-day mission will play a vital role in informing future exploration, including plans to land astronauts on the moon during Artemis III.

Laura Kelley, media relations professional in the CU Anschutz Office of Communications, discusses medical preparations and other Artemis mission details with Chris Haas, MD, MPH, a CU Anschutz School of Medicine graduate, NASA flight surgeon and deputy crew surgeon for the Artemis II mission. Haas has been working closely with the astronauts as they prepare for their journey. The Artemis II mission is set to launch as early as Feb. 6.
