Casey Greene, PhD: Turning Big Data into Bold Medicine

Written by Kristen O'Neill | March 10, 2023

Computational biology. Functional genomics. Biomedical informatics. For some, merely wrapping our minds around these concepts is a challenge. For Casey Greene, PhD, it’s all in a day’s work.

Think of Greene as a maestro of machine learning. A leader in the field of data analytics, Greene works at the confluence of computer science, biology, and medicine, connecting technology with vast, often disparate sets of data to advance research and enhance clinical care.

Greene likens the work he and his teams do to a tool like Google Maps, which pulls information needed to make decisions at hand. They use human-designed artificial intelligence to analyze, visualize and synthesize layers of data into useful information for clinicians and researchers. “Our goal is to make serendipity routine,” says Greene of their efforts to accelerate the search for answers and discovery of solutions.

We caught up with Greene – professor and chair of the CU Anschutz School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Informatics, the founding director of the Center for Health Artificial Intelligence, and founder of the Greene Lab – to dive a little deeper into his world.

Why are you passionate about what you do?

AI is transforming how we interact with the world at a visible pace. The advances we make to healthcare now will alter the landscape of the future and can make care more equitable, efficient, and effective.

How does being part of the CU Anschutz Medical Campus ecosystem help you further your work and your professional goals?

Making this a reality will require innovations in research and care, faculty driven to make real-world impacts, and the scale for advances to make a difference. Only a few places will combine all ingredients to get things right. CU Anschutz has all of these pieces and folks working across the campus to realize our potential.
