The evidence-based criteria regarding the use of catheters established by this clinician, researcher and professor has been implemented in hundreds of hospitals across the U.S. and globally, improving safety and outcomes for countless patients. 

Optimism. Intelligent risk-taking. Relentless incrementalism. These are but a few hallmarks of the leadership of Vineet Chopra, MMBS, MD, MSc. Chopra’s specialty is hospital medicine, with a research focus on patient safety and preventing hospital-acquired complications. 

As a result of his research, Chopra authored guidelines for the appropriate use of certain types of intravenous catheters that have been adopted by hundreds of hospitals in the U.S. and globally, improving outcomes for countless patients worldwide. Underpinning his drive to deliver excellent, compassionate, evidence-based care is the knowledge that “Someday, I will be in that patient bed,” Chopra says. “And just as I want the very best for my patients today, I would like that to be the standard for me or my loved ones tomorrow.”

As the chair of the largest clinical department (medicine) and professor with tenure at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Chopra is leading his colleagues in their pursuit of excellence, and mentoring the next generation of health science leaders and innovators. 

What drives you?

I’m driven by a passion for excellence and a relentless drive to continuously improve all things that I do. As chair, this means propelling our department to new heights across all of our missions, ensuring that all of our programs and people thrive along the way.

I enjoy being on the tennis or pickle-ball court with my son and daughter or going on long walks with my dog and the family taking in the beauty of Colorado.
