Ross Camidge, MD, PhD (left)
and Paul Maroni, MD (right)
Episode one features a discussion with two CU Anschutz faculty who have been treating Shapiro and Lombardi’s lung and prostate cancers, respectively – Ross Camidge, MD, PhD, professor and director of thoracic oncology, and Paul Maroni, MD, associate professor of surgery-urology.
Camidge discusses a wide range of topics with Shapiro and Lombardi, covering new and better standards of lung cancer care as experienced through Shapiro’s personal lung cancer diagnosis. Camidge stresses the importance of living with a positive mindset after such a diagnosis, saying a patient’s outlook can help make cancer a “footnote in your life.” They also touch on the impact COVID-19 is having on patients with reduced lung function.
Later in the episode, Maroni chats with the hosts about the initial concern and anxiety facing prostate cancer patients – in Lombardi’s case, it was a “Gleason 9” diagnosis – and the subsequent paths of treatment and outcomes. They also discuss the importance of building awareness in men nearing age 50 to get a prostate screening, and how the medical community is constantly searching for ways to improve cancer treatments, as well as psychological health, after a diagnosis.
