Why Are Teens Asking AI to Rate Their Faces?

Written by Carie Behounek | August 11, 2026

If you spend time on social media, you've probably come across the term "looksmaxxing" – a trend that encourages teens, particularly boys, to "optimize" their appearance. While some advice focuses on skincare or grooming, other recommendations promote risky practices such as bone smashing, growth hormones and cosmetic procedures.

Mental health experts warn that the trend can reinforce the harmful belief that appearance determines self-worth.

We asked Emily Hemendinger, MPH, LCSW, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, about what parents need to know. As a specialist in anxiety, OCD, eating disorders and body image, she shares why looksmaxxing has gained traction among teens, how it can impact mental health and how to start supportive conversations about appearance before mental health suffers.

The takeaway:

Looksmaxxing encourages teens to tie their appearance to their self-worth, often fueled by social media and AI face-rating tools. Mental health experts say parents can help by having open, judgment-free conversations, encouraging confidence beyond appearance and seeking professional support if concerns become overwhelming.
