Jason Espinoza, MD

The Department of Pediatrics is excited to announce that Jason Espinoza, MD, will take on the position of Residency Program Director starting April 1, 2025. Although Espinoza's official start date is set for April 2025, he will be actively involved in the ongoing interview season for our 2025-26 resident class.

Espinoza is an alumnus of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and went on to complete his pediatric residency and chief residency at the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Hospital. He then pursued a critical care fellowship at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Additionally, he earned a certificate from the Health Equity and Advocacy Scholars Program while at Northwestern.

In 2020, he joined Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) as an assistant professor of clinical pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care and is an attending physician in the pediatric intensive care unit at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

His academic leadership experience encompasses residency recruitment, managing schedules for over 120 pediatric residents and navigating ACGME requirements. At IUSM, he served as the PICU rotation director, where he developed a comprehensive didactic curriculum and conducted end-of-block debriefs aimed at reducing resident burnout. As an associate program director for the categorical pediatric residency, he addressed new ACGME standards and enhanced applicant recruitment strategies.

Espinoza is deeply passionate about health equity, influenced by his upbringing as a first-generation healthcare worker from a lower-middle-class Mexican American family. This background enhances his empathy for underserved populations, including Hispanic patients and families and those from the LGBTQ+ community. He is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in medical education and advocating for marginalized groups. His research has focused on social determinants of health in the PICU, aiming to identify barriers faced by vulnerable patients and improve their care during hospitalization.

He will succeed Adam Rosenberg, MD, who will retire after leading the program for the last 21 years.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Dr. Jason Espinoza as he embarks on this exciting new chapter.
