Knupp Named Associate Vice Chair for Academic Affairs

Kelly Knupp, MD, MSCS

The Department of Pediatrics (DOP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Kelly Knupp, MD, MSCS, Section of Child Neurology, as an Associate Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, effective August 1, 2025. Knupp will join the DOP academic affairs team, led by Professor and Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, Mark Abzug, MD, Section of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology and Distinguished Professor and Associate Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, Nancy Krebs, MD, MS, Section of Nutrition. In her new role, Knupp will assist Abzug and Krebs in facilitating and overseeing DOP academic affairs activities, including providing guidance and support to new and current faculty.

Knupp earned her medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency, pediatric neurology residency and pediatric epilepsy fellowship at New York Presbyterian Hospital. After her training and several years on faculty in New York, she joined the University of Colorado School of Medicine DOP in 2006. She later completed her subspecialty clinical outcomes research fellowship within the Adult and Child Center for Outcomes Research and Delivery Science (ACCORDS) and obtained her master of science in clinical science from the University of Colorado in 2017. She was promoted to professor of pediatrics and neurology in 2024. From 2022–24, she served as interim section head for pediatric child neurology. Currently, she holds the position of epilepsy program director and director of the Dravet Program within the Section of Child Neurology.

Knupp has an impressive research record focused on pediatric epilepsy. Since 2023, she has served as editor-in-chief for the journal Epilepsy Research and is currently an at-large board member for the American Epilepsy Society, where she participates on the Advocacy Task Force. Additionally, she was a founding member and is currently a steering committee member for the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium, among other national leadership roles.

Having served as co-chair of the DOP Mid-Point Review Committee since 2022, Knupp has demonstrated a commitment to fostering faculty development and growth. She is enthusiastic about leading in this new capacity to implement key initiatives related to faculty appointments, comprehensive early career evaluations, promotions and awards of tenure within the department.
