Miyamoto Appointed Section Head of Cardiology

The Department of Pediatrics is extremely pleased to announce Shelley D. Miyamoto, MD, (professor, Section of Cardiology) as our new Section Head of Pediatric Cardiology and Co-Director of the Heart Institute, effective December 1, 2023. Dr. Miyamoto brings a wealth of experience to our team, having completed her Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Colorado in 2005 and holding key positions since then. Prior to joining us, she obtained her medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed her pediatric residency training at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where she served as a chief resident.

Dr. Miyamoto's impressive career is marked with distinguished academic achievements, such as her promotion from instructor to professor and multiple hospital appointments. She currently serves as the Director of the Cardiomyopathy Program and holds the inaugural Jack Cooper Millisor Chair in Pediatric Heart Disease at Children's Hospital Colorado. Her research focuses on basic and translational research within cardiology, with a particular emphasis on the study of dilated cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease. The NIH continuously funds her lab, including several institutional and foundation awards.

As someone who is passionate about mentoring, Dr. Miyamoto has been a trusted advisor to over 40 trainees, students and junior faculty during her tenure. She currently serves as the co-chair for the department's Pediatrics Promotion Committee and holds several leadership positions and memberships. She is a member of the American Heart Association, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Society for Pediatric Research, amongst others. Furthermore, she has presented extensively throughout her career, served on medical and scientific advisory boards, and co-invented several patents.

Dr. Miyamoto's top priorities as the new section head include the advancement of cardiology and the Heart Institute within Children's Hospital Colorado, continuing to mentor and develop the team, and expanding research programs. As the new section head, Shelley is entrusted with a support package that will enable targeted growth and further development of the section’s clinical, research and academic programs. 

Lastly, we are ever grateful to Dr. Dunbar Ivy, the Section Head of Cardiology since 2003, for his leadership and contributions to the section over the past 20 years. Dr. Ivy will remain in the section as a valued mentor, researcher and leader of the section’s Pulmonary Hypertension program.
