Kilts, bagpipes, haggis…and pharmacy! Over a dozen CU Pharmacy faculty and staff recently descended upon Glasgow, Scotland for the 78th International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, “Our presence at FIP speaks volumes about our school’s commitment to and impact on global pharmacy education, clinical practice and research,” said Dean Ralph Altiere.
The FIP World Congress attracts thousands of pharmacy educators, practitioners and pharmaceutical scientists from around the world to come together to share knowledge and work towards improved and sustainable care for patients.
CU Pharmacy hosted an exhibit booth highlighting its International Trained PharmD (ITPD) program and faculty shared their research through several posters and presentations. Dr. Jacci Bainbridge, had standing room only for her presentation in the FIP “Hot Topics” session Hashing it Out - Marijuana a Cause or a Cure? Dr. Kari Franson’s presentation, Sharing Experience Across Borders: Training Programmes highlighted programs such as Pharmabridge™. CU Pharmacy has hosted several international pharmacists in the Pharmabridge™ program - which is aimed at strengthening pharmacy services and pharmacy education in low-income and emerging countries.

Other faculty members in attendance at FIP included Jacci Bainbridge, Laura Borgelt, Doug Fish, Robert Page, Paul Reynolds, and Sarah Scoular.
“Our school and faculty are in a constant state of activity on local, national and international pharmacy stages,” added Dean Altiere, who's also a Fellow of FIP elected in 2016. In Glasgow, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the International Pharmacy Student Federation (IPSF).
He was also directly involved with AIM (Academic Institutional Membership) as an Advisory Committee Member and AIM Deans Forum Facilitator, Immediate Past President of the Academic Pharmacy Section and liaison with the International Pharmaceutical Student Federation (IPSF), FIP Congress Program Committee member, FIPEducation (FIPEd) Executive Committee member and Director of the FIP-UNESCO-UNITWIN program to advance pharmacy education globally and its Center for Excellence in Africa program.
Next year’s FIP World Congress will be held September 22-26 in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The theme for 2019 is: New Horizons for Pharmacy – Navigating Winds of Change and will focus on how innovations in education, science, and practice are changing the way pharmacists work.
