It is estimated that there will be 2 million new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States this year that’s 2 million new patients who need a pharmacist to ensure the safe and effective use of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. Pharmacists’ expertise also provides essential support and education to patients and caregivers. As the frontline advocates in a multidisciplinary team, oncology pharmacists are vital in navigating the challenges of treatment, transforming hope into actionable care.

Oncology pharmacy is one of the more than 100 career options available to PharmDs, and it’s what Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and Professor, Cindy O’Bryant, PharmD, has dedicated her life to.

“The physicians who don’t have pharmacists embedded in their clinics, really do want them, and are looking for ways to get them. Because they see the advantage of having those pharmacists and the level of care that we can provide and how we elevate what we do for our patients,” Dr. O’Bryant said.

Pharmacists play a vital role in the care of cancer patients, serving as key members of the healthcare team. They provide critical support through medication management, patient education, symptom relief, and financial assistance, helping patients navigate the challenges of their illness and treatment. As advocates for patient safety and well-being, oncology pharmacists embody the importance of the pharmacy profession in improving lives and fostering hope in the face of cancer.
