After nearly two decades of leadership at CU Anschutz, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Roderick Nairn, PhD, is preparing to retire at the end of the year. He will remain part-time through June 2026. While his contributions have shaped the campus in profound ways, Nairn says what stands out most are the people and their extraordinary accomplishments.

When asked to choose a favorite memory, Nairn admitted the challenge: “I’ve been here so long, there are probably too many to list after 18 years.” After some thought, he landed on commencements. “I would say a favorite memory would be all the commencements – the campuswide ceremonies where we have everybody there, and also the single school and college ones. I think they are a very important part of the academic year.”

For Nairn, these ceremonies represent more than student achievement. “It’s more than students. Faculty and administrators are acknowledged with awards, and it brings faculty, staff and students – the whole campus – together.”

As for the greatest lesson learned during his tenure? His answer was simple but powerful: “Show up and get things done. There will always be change, but rather than complain, show up, work and get things done.”

Nairn’s career at CU began in 2007, and his leadership has been instrumental in expanding academic programs, boosting enrollment and guiding the campus through accreditation milestones for both CU Denver and CU Anschutz. A biochemist by training and a tenured professor of biology at CU Denver and professor of immunology and microbiology at CU Anschutz, he has authored numerous publications and mentored many trainees. His contributions earned him a special resolution of appreciation from the CU Board of Regents in 2021.

"In his many years with CU Anschutz – from our earliest days on this campus – Dr. Nairn has been instrumental to our growth and evolution," said Chancellor Don Elliman. "Rod has also been an invaluable member of my leadership team and a trusted friend and colleague. We're grateful for all he has made possible."

As the campus looks ahead, Nairn leaves behind a legacy defined not only by institutional growth but by a commitment to community and collaboration – a lesson he hopes will endure long after his retirement.
