Adam Spears (pictured left above) has built a dynamic career at CU Anschutz over the past seven years, evolving from a CU Print Services driver to his current role as parking program assistant for Facilities Management. His journey reflects the campus’s commitment to growth and opportunity, a sentiment echoed by his entire family – six members strong – who all work at CU Anschutz across various departments. From his mother, Shana, in the CU Cancer Center to his wife, Sylvia, at the Colorado School of Public Health, the Spears family exemplifies how CU Anschutz fosters a sense of purpose, community and advancement.

Q&A Header

How long have you worked at CU Anschutz and what do you do here?

I've worked here for seven years, since 2018. I'm currently the parking program assistant for Facilities Management. I oversee our parking program on campus. I handle our vendor, I oversee the contract and I also handle a lot of the back-end auditing and numbers for parking.

Can you tell us a little bit about your career journey and how you found yourself at CU Anschutz?

I was working in a music store for a while. Then my parents were just like, "All right, we're going to kick you out, or you got to get a full-time job, start paying rent." A job posted here. My mother, father and brother

  • Mom, Shana, 18 years as a program coordinator at the CU Cancer Center.
  • Dad, Jon, 10 years as an electrical supervisor for Facilities Management.
  • Sister-in-law, May (Mariana), an administrative assistant for the CU Cancer Center.
  • Brother, Zach, eight years as desktop support lead in the School of Medicine IT department.

already worked here.

So, I applied for a driver position for CU Print Services and I got the job. I handled checks to start, and did production, bindery and helped with printing. And I did most of the deliveries.

I worked there until around 2021. During COVID, I was repurposed to a few different roles.

I spent some time in grounds, and I went downtown to CU Denver and managed the COVID checkpoints and those student workers. Then I came back to CU Anschutz after COVID slowed down a little bit.

I worked in custodial for a little while, and kind of cut my teeth, improving processes and making things move a little smoother. Eventually, I worked my way into my position with parking now.

Why CU Anschutz? Why do you like it here?

I love the people that I work with, and I like feeling like I can be part of something bigger, providing education for the next generation of physicians, nurses, dentists, and everything they do on campus.

I've worked in a lot of different areas on campus. I interact with so many different kinds of people, so many different worldviews and ideas, and it's a really beautiful amalgamation of so many different minds.

Probably my favorite thing about working here is all of the different perspectives and getting to talk to people about their thoughts and ideas.

Also, the benefits are great.

I am working towards a bachelor's degree at CU Denver currently with the tuition assistance benefit.

What do you like to do when you're not working?

I'm a musician. I play guitar, bass and piano.

I run sound for a few different bands around town. My main group is Groove N’ Motion. They're a 15-piece corporate band that plays all over the place. They play everything from top-40 to ’70s funk. They even have a five-piece horn section. They're a blast.

What three words would you use to describe CU Anschutz?

Family, in more ways than one. Obviously, my whole family works here, but also, the people that I work with feel like family. It feels like a very cohesive group of individuals that operate on campus.

My second word is compassionate.

And finally, purposeful. It feels like everyone on campus is all working towards a greater good, and that fuels all the missions we have on campus, especially in the climate we're in now, where there's more and more skepticism about science, doctors and researchers.
