John F. “Fred” Thomas, PhD, will retire in June 2026 after a distinguished career in health and medicine. He has been an integral leader in digital health at CU Anschutz, most recently serving as executive director of The Care Collaborative at the CU Anschutz School of Medicine, where he is also a professor. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Colorado School of Public Health.

Dr. Thomas joined Children’s Hospital Colorado in 2012 to lead telehealth efforts, serving in that role for more than a decade. He played a key role in developing ECHO (Extension for Community Health Outcomes) and eConsult programs at CU Anschutz ‒ vital initiatives that he continued to advance as head of The Care Collaborative.

“Dr. Fred Thomas’s work has expanded access to care, advanced academic medicine and empowered thousands of providers nationwide,” said Chancellor Don Elliman. “CU Anschutz ‒ and the communities we serve ‒ are stronger because of his leadership.”

We thank Dr. Thomas for his many contributions to CU Anschutz and the state of Colorado, and we wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.
