CU Cancer Center member Sachin Wani, MD, Katy O. and Paul M. Rady Esophageal and Gastric Center Chair and professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, highlighted that about 0.3% of people with Barrett’s esophagus develop esophageal cancer each year, making screening for Barrett’s crucial for detecting the disease. He noted that individuals with Barrett’s are nine times more likely to die from esophageal cancer than those without it, underscoring the need for improved screening methods to catch the condition earlier.
