The members of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Pediatric Sepsis Definitions Task Force wanted not only to update the criteria specifically for children but also to establish parameters that clinicians could use whether they practice in countries or areas with more or fewer resources, because sepsis is a major public health burden throughout the world.
