When Kathy Michel researched the cost of Invisalign invisible braces in 2024, she opted to receive care at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine (CU SDM) on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. One of her front teeth had slightly turned inward, which bothered her aesthetically. Invisalign was an option to correct her smile.

Michel was quoted a cost of nearly $4,000 for Invisalign from a local private practice. But at the CU Orthodontic Clinic, she paid around $400 for a year of treatment, which clinicians described as a limited-care case.

“It was a no-brainer in terms of cost,” she said.

Michel, CU SDM director of marketing and communications, said that receiving care on campus has made life easier.

“Since I work on campus, it’s convenient for me to see my dentist and orthodontist,” she said. “I save a lot of time, since I can walk from my office to the clinic.”

It has also helped her on the job.

“It gives me a deeper understanding of the patient journey and enhances how I support the teaching and research efforts at the CU School of Dental Medicine,” Michel explained. “Getting to know more about the clinical side helps me communicate more authentically and effectively about the school’s impact.”

Eight Clinics Cover Your Dental Care Needs

The School of Dental Medicine has eight specialty clinics, including:

  • The Dental Team Care Clinic offers care with fees up to 50% less than private practice. Treatment typically requires longer appointment times, with patients receiving effective dental care from students under the supervision of faculty.
  • The Dental First Aid Clinic is for patients experiencing a dental emergency, including a lost or loose tooth, infection or trauma related to a dental appliance.
  • The General Practice Residency Clinic offers patients advanced, comprehensive care, including cosmetic dentistry — teeth whitening and veneers — implant dentistry and root canals.
  • Patients with dental issues affecting gum and bone tissues can visit the Graduate Periodontics Clinic, which provides comprehensive periodontal care.

The school also has a dedicated grant program for veterans funded by the Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Top-Notch Clinical Research

The CU School of Dental Medicine has a long history of training the best dentists in the community and region, according to Micaela Gibbs, DDS, MHA, professor and senior associate dean of clinical affairs and professional practice.

“As educators, we have an obligation to be the source for the most current dental knowledge, techniques and evidence-based care,” she said.

That means patients can learn about and choose new treatment methods, technologies and innovative care options that may not yet be widely available within the dental realm.

“A great example is our embrace of digital technology in the care of our patients,” Gibbs said. “These advanced techniques let us design and create beautiful crowns and bridges right here at the school, without messy impression material. Even more exciting, we’re one of the few dental schools testing inkjet printing to make dentures. This cutting-edge approach means stronger, faster and more reliable dentures — with a digital file ready in case replacements are ever needed.”

Training the Next Generation of Dentists

Fourth-year dental student Sydney Miller, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, said that the clinics offer patients and students a unique experience.

During her time at CU, she said she has developed long-term relationships with her patients. The experience has also shown her how continuity of care, combined with a supportive learning environment, enhances the patient experience.

“Many have been in my care for over a year, allowing me to build strong patient-provider trust and continually improve my communication skills,” she said. “Applying feedback from our simulated patient encounters in the classroom has helped boost my confidence and shaped my clinical approach,” Miller added.

It’s a win for everyone involved. Patients get high-quality treatment, and they also become part of the educational process, helping shape the next generation of dental professionals.

“Many of my patients find it rewarding to contribute to student learning, and they appreciate the thorough, person-centered care that comes with it,” said Miller, who plans to complete a one-year residency with the U.S. Army after she finishes dental school.

Compassionate Care with a Purpose

Michel is among the grateful patients who appreciate supporting emerging dental professionals while benefiting from compassionate, cutting-edge care.

“Whether you’re looking for routine checkups or more advanced procedures, the clinics offer a warm, professional environment where your health and comfort truly matter,” she said.
