Mark Deutchman, MD, FAAFP, CU Anschutz Associate Dean for Rural Health, Director of the Rural Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine, and Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, stars on the Fall 2025 cover of CU Medicine Today, the magazine highlighting the people and events shaping the School of Medicine.

The cover story, “20 Years of Rural Medicine Training,” celebrates the impact that the University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine’s Rural Program has had on the education and advocacy of rural healthcare. Dr. Deutchman is celebrated throughout the article, from the early steps of his career and his innovative leadership as the program’s founder and director, to his passion for teaching medical students—keeping the “rural spark” bright.

While honoring the Rural Program’s monumental moments past and present, the team remains focused on growth. When asked about his vision for the future, Dr. Deutchman points to expanding community engagement and strengthening research efforts.

“We have a terrific group of faculty and staff and support from the Department of Family Medicine and the CU Anschutz School of Medicine to continue the educational work. The next step is to establish a center for rural health at CU to expand our advocacy, community engagement, and research efforts.”

The Department of Family Medicine is proud to echo this well‑deserved recognition of Dr. Deutchman and the Rural Program. Their dedication to rural health and their commitment to communities across Colorado reflects the Department’s mission to support patients and their families wellbeing.
