In the realm of healthcare, the importance of employee well-being cannot be overstated. Recognizing this, the CU Anschutz Medical Campus Department of Medicine embarked on a mission to boost morale and support frontline clinicians during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the array of programs initiated, one standout success has been the introduction of WellDOM Carts.
The WellDom Carts initiative, spearheaded by Katie Morrison, MD, Director for WellDom, and Katie Dickerman, NP, Associate Director for WellDOM, was conceptualized in 2019 and officially launched in January 2020. The cart, filled with an assortment of goodies and themed items, is rolled out across clinical, ambulatory, research, and administrative spaces, bringing a moment of respite and joy to busy professionals. Dickerman adds, “We find that not only those whom we engage with the cart but also those who take the cart out for rounding get great satisfaction by interacting with their peers, bringing goods to faculty and staff.”
The concept is simple yet powerful: deliver happiness directly to those who need it most. Each month, the WellDOM Carts are themed around different aspects of well-being, from stress management to sleep health, exercise, outdoor safety, and even gardening. These themes not only provide practical tips and resources but also serve as conversation starters around important topics related to self-care and wellness.
The contents of the WellDOM Carts are carefully curated to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of staff members. From popcorn and pretzels to coffee, tea, stress balls, and gratitude journals, every item is selected with the intention of promoting relaxation, positivity, and appreciation. Moreover, the inclusion of educational materials ensures that recipients walk away not only with treats but also with valuable insights into enhancing their overall well-being.
The impact of the WellDOM Carts extends far beyond the tangible items distributed. They serve as tangible expressions of appreciation and support from the department, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging among staff members. Additionally, the initiative has garnered recognition and support from departmental leadership, underscoring its significance in promoting a positive work environment.
WellDOM Carts exemplify the power of small gestures to make a big difference. By prioritizing the well-being of professionals and fostering a culture of care and appreciation, the Department of Medicine has set a shining example for healthcare institutions everywhere.
