The CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center (AHWC) is more than just a fitness and wellness hub—it's a place where students can grow both personally and professionally. The center has been a springboard for students across various academic fields, providing opportunities that prepare them for future careers while supporting their educational journey. Sydney Stapleton, who joined the AHWC as a part-time student worker in February 2022, shares her experience. "In my final year of undergraduate studies, while earning my Bachelor's in Psychology, I was hired as a part-time student worker. My role involved administrative projects, but the center made it clear that school was my priority. They were flexible with my schedule, allowing me to work around my classes and ensuring that I felt supported in my academic goals." By July 2023, Sydney had transitioned into a full-time university staff role, with benefits that included tuition assistance. "The center supported me every step of the way, from providing job opportunities to guiding me through applying for graduate school," she recalls. "I’m incredibly grateful for the support and resources, especially the tuition assistance that is enabling me to pursue my graduate degree."
Like Sydney, many other students have thrived at the AHWC, transitioning into paid roles, internships, and even full-time positions within the university. One such student is Evan Griego, who started as a student assistant and, by January 2024, had become a full-time temporary employee with Research Services. Griego, with a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from Metro State, credits the center for his growth. "CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center has given me the opportunity to grow personally, academically, and professionally. The resources that have been provided to me are priceless and the connections that I have made have been equally important. I am thankful to have a great opportunity to grow in such a welcoming environment."
Another success story is Halle Murphy, who started as an intern before progressing into a paid role with the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise team. Murphy, a recent graduate from CSU with a bachelor's degree in Health and Exercise Science, emphasizes the importance of gaining hands-on experience. "The AHWC has significantly supported both my personal and professional growth in the exercise science field. The AHWC provides the unique benefit of collaborating clinical and patient exposure, with fitness and overall wellness. The program I work for, BfitBwell, has given me the resources and experience to cater exercise programs to the cancer population and enhance their quality of life during and after cancer treatment. Beyond this, I get to work alongside multiple ongoing research studies being done at AHWC which has broadened my horizons regarding exercise science and has given me the space to build professional skills and relationships".
AHWC fosters growth across diverse fields of study, from Exercise Science to Biology to Public Health, the AHWC provides a platform for students to explore their passions while working towards their academic and professional goals. Nancy Nickless, Manager of Finance, HR, IT, and Grants & Contracts at AHWC shares, "Our goal is to create an environment where students feel empowered to take initiative, gain real-world experience, and thrive both academically and professionally."
With the support of dedicated staff, flexible work arrangements, and access to valuable resources, the AHWC is a vital stepping stone for students on the Anschutz Medical Campus.
