What You Need To Know

The University of Colorado School of Medicine has moved up in rankings for primary care and research; first time in top 30 for research. Colorado School of Public Health makes Top 20 best programs in the nation, moving up three spaces. The CU College of Nursing and Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences also make lists.

Schools and colleges of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus are again ranked among the best in the country on the 2022 U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of higher education programs.

School of Medicine Moves Up in Primary Care, Research

The University of Colorado School of Medicine is listed No. 6 in primary care and No. 27 in research on the Best Medical School rankings released today by U.S. News and World Report.

Each year, U.S. News compiles listings of medical schools in two general categories – primary care and research – based on surveys and data reviews of accredited medical schools in the United States. The magazine then assigns rankings to schools using its own criteria to assess the information, which includes peer assessments provided by professionals at other medical schools.

This year, the magazine considered 191 medical and osteopathic schools. Of those institutions, 129 provided the data that U.S. News needed to calculate its rankings. Among the factors considered are quality assessments by leaders at peer institutions, surveys of residency directors, total NIH research activity, median MCAT scores, and percentage of students who enter primary care residencies.

On last year’s U.S. News listing, the CU School of Medicine was No. 9 for primary care and No. 31 for research. This is the fourth time in the past six years that the CU School of Medicine has ranked in the top 10 for primary care; it is the first time that the school ranks in the top 30 for research.

“We are focused providing high-quality training, clinical, and research programs in medical science,” says CU School of Medicine Dean John J. Reilly, Jr., MD. “Our approach has led to a record number of applications for our MD class, increased research funding and philanthropic support, and inspirational and groundbreaking work by our faculty. We are proud of our faculty and staff for their dedication to excellence, which in turn inspires a new generation of outstanding health care leaders.”

Colorado School of Public Health Named in the Top 20 Public Health Schools and Programs

U.S. News and World Report has named the Colorado School of Public Health among the top 20 schools and programs of public health in the nation. ColoradoSPH and three other schools are ranked and tied for 20th out of 188 Master of Public Health programs accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

ColoradoSPH moved up three places from No. 23 in 2019, when all schools and programs of public health were last ranked. The rankings are the result of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators, and faculty of CEPH-accredited public health degree programs or schools.

Schools and programs of public health are typically ranked by the publication once every five years, and this new ranking comes at a time when “public health” has become a household phrase. The COVID-19 pandemic put public health in the spotlight as did recognition of the urgent need to take on structural racism and other social determinants of health. Much of what the field does—preparedness and policy, epidemiology, workplace safety, and mental health—has become far more familiar over the last few years. Nationally and in the Colorado School of Public Health, there are increasing applications and student numbers as public health has gained prominence.

“I am delighted by this new ranking and our growing recognition,” said ColoradoSPH Dean Jonathan Samet, MD, MS. “I am proud of the role that the Colorado School of Public Health has played with many partners to help slow the COVID-19 pandemic, and all the work our school is doing in multiple areas of public health regionally, nationally and worldwide. Additionally, our faculty, staff, and students are pushing us forward as an institution and our alumni are filling critical public health roles in Colorado and beyond. I have no doubt that we will continue to move up in ranking as we develop new programs, advance our research, and find innovative ways to train our students.”

College of Nursing in Top 20 for Best Online Nursing, Leadership Programs

U.S. News & World Report has released their annual ranking of the best online programs, listing the College of Nursing on the Anschutz Medical Campus as 17th best online Master’s degree program out of more than 200 programs in 2021. It also named the College of Nursing’s MSN administration and leadership program, called iLEAD, as 14th best out of 61 online programs.

“This is a wonderful recognition for our college, faculty and students who work hard every day to ensure patients will get the best health care possible. This just further enhances our reputation as a leader and pioneer in nursing education. We appreciate the U.S. News & World Report for this honor,” said Dean Elias Provencio-Vasquez, PhD.

U.S. News ranks schools according to engagement, faculty credential and training, services and technology, expert opinion, and student excellence. The publication only ranks fully accredited programs in good standing.
