A Q&A with HIE Impact Initiative at CU Anschutz Innovations
Scientific discoveries can take many paths beyond the lab, from licensing and industry partnerships to startup creation and patient impact. To help the CU Anschutz community better understand this journey, CU Anschutz Innovations, through the HIE Impact Initiative, has launched The Business of Science, a new adaptive learning platform powered by Amplifire.
What is the “Business of Science” learning platform?
- A new interactive learning tool developed by CU Anschutz Innovations in partnership with Amplifire to help faculty, staff, and students understand how scientific discoveries move from research to real-world impact.
- A collection of expert-curated knowledge delivered through a proven adaptive learning platform that helps learners master content faster and has been successfully deployed in hundreds of training modules at UCHealth and Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO). Content is built on validated information and reviewed by subject matter experts.
- A centralized set of lessons created by experienced entrepreneurs, for passionate innovators at any stage on their pathway to impact.
Who is the platform designed for?
- Anyone at CU Anschutz interested in innovation, including:
- Faculty researchers and clinicians
- Graduate students and trainees
- Staff supporting research and innovation
- Early-stage innovators exploring commercialization
- Seasoned entrepreneurs looking to improve their business knowledge base
- No prior business or startup experience is required. You need an active CU email address to register.
Why did the team pick this specific tool?
- Amplifire’s platform is built on a foundational understanding of how people learn (education psychology).
- Amplifire is a local, CO-based startup that UCHealth and CU Anschutz Innovations have invested in.
- The platform is AI-powered and hand-built with human validation, trained on intentional inputs provided by subject area experts for each module and thoroughly reviewed by the HIE Impact team.
Is it free?
- Yes, the tool is currently free to all CU faculty, staff and students. It is funded through the HIE Impact Initiative, thanks to the generous support of HIE department chairs and leadership across CU Anschutz. (link to the sponsors)
- We are offering this exclusive opportunity for the first 250 learners to sign up – don't miss your chance!
How long will I have access?
- The program renews by calendar year, this cycle is active through December 31st, 2026.
- We plan to renew annually – you will have at least 6 months of access if you sign up now!
- If we receive positive feedback from learners, we will extend the access timeline and look at building additional modules.
Will new modules be added periodically?
- Yes! If we receive positive feedback from learners, we will extend the access timeline and look at building additional modules.
- We are talking with student affairs about creating a microcredential program based on this course.
Can I share my login with my staff/ fellows/ team?
- No, logins will be tied to your unique email and accessed via SAML through your Microsoft account. Your course will be customized to your knowledge level. Please do not share your login!
As I know more on the business of science, what should I be doing with that knowledge? Are they ways to activate?
- Submit Invention Disclosures as appropriate! Early!
- Apply for microgrants
- Work with an Idea Navigator through our new Office Hours program
Is there a human I can contact if I have any issues or questions?
- Sign up to chat with an Idea Navigator at Innovations Office Hours or contact us here: https://www.cuanschutz.edu/innovations/about-us/contact
What topics will the modules cover?
- Modules focus on the fundamentals of translational science and innovation, including:
- Introduction to Biomedical Innovation & Commercialization
- Understanding Technology Transfer
- Intellectual Property Fundamentals
- Market Discovery & Customer Validation
- Introduction to Regulatory & Reimbursement Pathways
- Building a Business Model & Strategy
- Case Studies in Forming a Startup Company
- Building a Team & Advisory Network
- Funding & Financing Biomedical Startups
- Pitching, Partnerships & Exit Strategies
How long does it take to complete a module?
- Most modules can be completed in 15–30 minutes, and the adaptive learning technology allows users to move more quickly through material they already understand.
How is this different from traditional online training?
- The platform uses adaptive learning technology based on cognitive science to personalize the learning experience. Instead of passively watching videos, learners actively answer questions and engage with material tailored to their knowledge level.
Is this a pass/fail test?
- No. It is a learning tool. It's okay not to know all the answers. In fact, recognizing your knowledge gaps will help you learn more quickly.
Can I take a break during the course?
- Yes, but to maximize your learning experience, you should try to complete the module in one sitting. If you are unable to do so—you can always come back and pick up right where you left off.
Why can’t I go through the modules quickly and get a score?
- Amplifire is designed to teach you, not provide a score. Your answer to each question determines if additional learning is needed. If it is, Amplifire will provide it.
I’m trying to memorize the correct answers, but then a different question appears. Why is that?
- Memorizing answers is not the way to get through an Amplifire course. The best approach is to learn the content by paying careful attention to the explanations.
