The explosion of big data promises potential breakthroughs in disease treatments, but, just as in the development of new drugs, scientists and clinicians must exercise caution in how they apply algorithms and other technologies, according to a CU Anschutz panel of experts

“Recent reports suggest that food allergies are on the rise, with more food-allergy related hospitalizations in the U.S. over the last decade. However, many studies have been based on telephone surveys or have focused on a specific food allergen or allergen group,” said Li Zhou, MD, PhD, of the Division of General Medicine Primary Care at BWH. “We recognized that the electronic health record system could offer a treasure trove of information about allergies to better understand which populations may be most affected and just how common food allergies and intolerances are in the U.S.

The University of Colorado and Brigham and Women's Hospital published "Incidence of Speech Recognition Errors in the Emergency Department" to explore more about the mistakes that had entered the EHR system through the ED. How many errors had actually been introduced? Were they trivial, or did they have the potential to impact the quality of care or create medical liability?
Benjamin Li, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and emergency medicine physician with Denver Health, spoke with FOX31 about the importance of safe firearm storage.
Emmy Betz, MD, MPH, professor of emergency medicine and director of the CU Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative, was interviewed by The Atlantic regarding physicians asking patients about access to firearms and counseling them toward responsible storage.
Chris Knoepke, PhD, MSW, assistant professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and law enforcement lead for the CU Firearm Injury Prevention Initiative, was first author on a recent study published by JAMA Network Open. He is leading research on ERPO usage, especially in Colorado's Second Amendment Sanctuaries.
