The University of Colorado Family Medicine Residency (CUFMR) has been ranked number one in the nation for reputation among Family Medicine residency programs, according to Doximity's latest Residency Navigator report.

The ranking, reported in a Becker’s Hospital Review, places CUFMR at the top of Family Medicine programs nationwide based on physician nominations collected through Doximity's reputation surveys. The report evaluates residency programs across multiple specialties using measures that include reputation and research output.

Dean of the CU Anschutz School of Medicine, John Sampson, MD, PhD, MBA, congratulated the Department of Family Medicine and recognized the hard work that goes into earning such a prestigious title.

“Rankings like this don't happen by chance—they reflect years of dedicated leadership, outstanding faculty, talented residents, and graduates whose excellence continues to enhance the reputation of our institution,” said Dean Sampson. “This recognition reinforces what we already know—that CU Anschutz is home to one of the nation's premier Family Medicine programs. It also reflects our shared commitment to excellence in education, patient care, and service to our communities.”

Corey Lyon, DO, FAAFP, Program Director of the CU Family Medicine Residency Program and Professor of Family Medicine echoed that sentiment. "This recognition reflects the incredible residency we have built here. Receiving this level of recognition means the hard work of our faculty, residents and, most importantly, the work and service our graduates are doing is being recognized."

Doximity's Residency Navigator includes more than 4,000 U.S. residency programs across 26 specialties. Reputation rankings are based on three years of nomination surveys completed by board-certified physicians within each specialty. Research output rankings are derived from alumni publications, h-index scores, grant funding, and clinical trial participation over the previous decade, with programs compared against others in the same field.

According to Dr. Lyon, the program's success is rooted in its people.

"The reputation of the CUFMR program has been built solidly by the people we have in the residency. Everyone from our talented, hard-working residents to our full-scope faculty members teaching and working in the outpatient, inpatient and obstetric settings has helped create an exceptional training environment."

When asked what makes our program stand out among others, Dr. Lyon pointed to the program's individualized approach to resident education.

"We are committed to providing the best training possible for our residents. Our faculty works with each resident individually—identifying their career goals and helping build a residency experience that meets those goals. We call it 'the residency within the residency.'"

The Department of Family Medicine celebrates this national recognition and the faculty, residents, staff and alumni whose dedication continues to strengthen the program's reputation and impact across the country—congratulations!
